“Smarty Pants, you used to be such a normal guy — what the heck happened to you?”
Many people have asked me that question, but few have learned the answer. But now, I will reveal to you
the secret but absolutely true story of Smarty Pants.
It was the circus that did it. Not the kind of circus that just popped into your head,
held once a year in your local coliseum arena, where you’ll need a pair of binoculars to see
anything. No, this show was different. This troupe toured around the country playing the small
smoky theaters, bars, nightclubs — any space where people could see them and they could see you.
This was live entertainment, up close and personal, the way the circus used to be back in the early days.
After seeing this circus for the first time, thoughts of performing ruled my mind every day, from when I
got out of bed in the morning until I returned at night. I was caught in an unbreakable spell that created
Smarty Pants. Since that time, I’m always working hard to bring you a bigger and better show, to bring a
smile to my audience.
I’m often asked to describe Smarty Pants, and it’s a tough thing to do without sounding cliched. I’m a clown,
but I don’t wear the makeup. I’m a comedian, but I don’t do jokes. I’m a children’s performer that entertains
the adults at the same time. If you had to pin me down, I’d confess my two inspirations are Pee Wee Herman and
Andy Kaufman. Both performers have been big influences for Smarty Pants
The goal of Smarty Pants is to offer my audience something that is in scarce supply these days — live
entertainment. It is unfortunate that so much of children’s entertainment these days comes strictly from
the television. I truly believe that as an entertainer , I can inspire kids to explore their own creativity, and
make you laugh in the process!
